Flu has laid me low for the last few days. But getting the Spring 2009 edition of The Gettysburg Review cheered me. It includes “Natural Births” — a chapter from the book I’m working to finish. This is my first piece of literary nonfiction in print (I’ve had a few others come out in online publications this winter). In it, I share the story of how I gave birth in a village in Nepal and struggled to reconcile my fantasies of natural childbirth with the realities of Hindu culture.
When I feel better, I look forward to reading more of the work in this issue of TGR, including poems by Floyd Skloot and Rita Dove and essays by Amy Andrews and Jeffrey Meyers.
